Late again....

This is a vent, but is it just me or do other people find it extremely annoying and distracting to have people walk into an exam late. Our exams start at 6pm, bolded on the syllabus and well known, yet people seem to think its okay to walk in at 615-630 week after week. I don't understand why
they seem to think its okay to disrupt the rest of us who have the decency to show up on time. It is extremely distracting to me and its just annoying...any other opinions

Re: Late again....

this makes me really mad too! there is one student in my class who is consistently late every single day, and thinks its ok to slam the door and shut off her cell phone and walk infront of the projector and then ask "can you go back so i can get the first part of the lecture?" umm how about no. we all have to be there on time, and so should you... im paying alot for my education and i take it seriously... if you cant get there on time, dont freaking distract the other people who are trying to learn.

oh that chick makes me so mad. she will never get notes from me.

Re: Late again....

Maybe this is something you can talk about with your instructor.

If not, find yourself a seat far, far away from the door and tune it all out. Letting latecomers in (or not) is the instructor's job.

I'm usually way early for exams, because I like to make sure I have all my ducks in a row. But there were exceptions. Most notably, the time I had a fender-bender midway on the hour's drive to the test.

I was 15 minutes late. The instructor would not let me in. That was our school's policy.

Re: Late again....

People arriving late doesn't bother me because they're not getting any extra time: when the test ends is when the test ends and if people aren't finished, too bad so sad.

In Texas, I had a Micro instructor that told us on the first day of class that he locked the door once class began and if you were late, you weren't allowed in, period. No excuses, no pleading, you could bang on the door all 90 minutes: you were not getting in. His reputation for doing just that to students who were late had preceeded him, so no one dared tempt fate and risk being late.

What DOES bother me is when they don't turn their cell phones off. During every test, at least one person's bag is ringing or buzzing...repeatedly

Re: Late again....

I have been late on exam day a few times but I make sure that I leave everything in my car except for a couple of pencils and I tiptoe to my seat. It happens I'm not in charge of the people on the road so I get stuck by an accident on a weekly basis. The program itself had a proble with people missing the exam completely as we know in advance how much time and questions are on the exam and then would come during the break and ask what was on the test or call their friends during break for answers.

Our program started a policy about being late/missing a day on exams. We had to sign a paper stating that if we were more than 30 mins late for class or missed that exam as soon as we showed up we would be given a fiil in the blank version of the same exam with the same amount of time to finish.

Re: Late again....

Perhaps some of your classmates have problems getting from work, or there is traffic to deal with at that hour? If your intructors tolerate it, there must be a legitimate reason for allowing people in to class late.

Re: Late again....

I understand things happen, but it is the same people week after week, same people late to clinical it just gets old when I'm trying to get work done and they disrupt it. Small classrooms don't exactly allow for moving far from the door.

Re: Late again....

Yup...it's the whole "the world is important, so it's gonna stop for me" syndrome. I hate to break it to people, but when you get out in the real world, if you're late for work, and I'm late leaving because of YOU....well, let's just say I'm not going to be really helpful before I go.
I have no problem helping you if you're here, set, and ready for report within 5-10 mins of the start of the shift.....you calling and saying "I'm a little late." when you don't show till 25 mins after the start....that's not OK.
In terms of school, some instructors are just nicer than others.....and I know what kind I'm going to be. If my students end up late to an exam, they better have A)called and left a message on my office phone or B) prepared to take an alternate version.
Overall, lateness isn't a big issue in my class. Now, immature behavior? Whole other story.....

Our instructor makes us turn our phones off and everyones stuff is at the front of the room. If it rings or vibrates she says she will throw the backpack/purse into the hall. Haven't had one ring during a test in a semester and a half!

Re: Late again....

Wow...this is a HUGE instructor issue....I am amazed that folks are allowed in late for an quiz/test, but REALLY amazed that clinical lateness is tolerated...I walked in one day at the minute we are supposed to be at the hospital a few weeks ago and got the "what happened to you" routine toward the end of pre-clinicals from our instructor.....<sheesh>.....
