Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

I am so worried, I just found out I have to work at least 10 hours while Im in the program. The reason why I am worried is because I dont know if I will drown in the program while working and I have a 4 yr old and a 2 1/2 year old. I will try my best in the program because I want this so bad but I feel like I have to put my children in daycare more than they should and I feel bad.I will try my very hardest but will this be good enough? Any of you out there that have done the nursing program with kids and while working? Will I make it with so many responsibilities? Please Help?

If you want something so bad, then you will find a way. I am not in that situation, but by going thru many of the allnurses posts, you will find MANY that have done it/are doing it. Trust me, you will be so encouraged. It may be hard, but doable. How is your network system? Do you live near family or friend who can help? Think, even if you have to put your children in daycare, it is not for the rest of thier lives. You are working for a means to an end {gosh, did I say that right? }.

Oh, there is a woman with 4 children in my pharmacology class getting ready to go into her second semester of NS school. However, I do not know her personal story. She must have sometype of motivational story with 4 kiddos....my hero !

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

10 hours isn't that much, I work 25-30 hours during school...but I also don't have kids, so take that with a grain of salt. Also, 10 hours isn't that much, I mean isn't it going to cost more than you are going to earn to put your kids in daycare for that amount of time? Just asking if it is actually worth it.

But yes, you can work and do school. I think of one woman in my class in particular who is a single mom who works full time and has been doing well.

good luck.

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

think of it as only working one day a week. or two afternoons a week. 10 hours is less tha the average that a nursing student works with children. Plan on having no life and a dirty house. I would only clean my house the same day after I took an exam. I would scrub it top to bottom did my grocery shopping till the next exam. I learned what frozen food was and canned soup. The microwave is a great invention and it is to be used to feed young children when you have no time. Yes you are going to to feel Guilty for never seeing your kids. But it will all be over soon and the rewards outweighs the sacrifice. good luck- By the way you kind of lucky in a way your kids are still little and there is no reason they cant go to bed at 7pm and you have the rest of the night to study.

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

It will probably feel incredibly overwhelming the first month to two months. However, after that you begin to understand how the exams are, what your instructors focus on, and where you can start cutting corners and still maintain good grades.

I personally work 20 hours a week, but I took a months leave of absence the first month of nursing school and now feel very comfortable working 20 hours a week because it is not nearly time consuming as it was the first month because I see where I can "cut corners" and still maintain 'A's'.

And yes, your house will probably be a mess for a while and you may have to crack down and eat unhealthy once a week, but you can do it.. trust me! Just think that if the girl/guy next to you is able to do it, so are you!

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

I worked full time night shift (11pm -7am) as an LPN, had a 5 year old son, useless husband and went to college full time for my RN. I lived thru it...... granted I was only 25 at the time, I would NOT want to have to do that again. BUT, it was so worth it.

It all depends on just how bad do you want something??? Yes you don't see your kids much, your house is dirty all the time (you get used to it after a while).

BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!!!!!!!!

I am now going back to get my BSN, I start my 1st class on tuesday. This time I am only taking one or two classes at a time (I am just to old to keep up that pace I did back then....)

Keep the faith, you CAN DO IT.

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

I worked 10 hours a week on Saturdays and will continue to do so this August 20th when I start school. I have a 17 year old 10 year old 3 year old and 9 month old. I am worried too but with the help of my husband and older daughters I think I will manage, I am just trying to pass with out failing out. I will study every night a couple of hours and longer before a test. I have heard study groups will help and hope a couple of us will be able to start a group.

U can do it and so can I. The time will fly by to May of 2009!!

Re: Just found out I have to work during my RN program.

I work full time- and have three kids- yes it is hard to put them in childcare- I have been worrying about that- my husband and I have been checking out new daycares- my youngest is 4 and I want him in a daycare that has a better preschool- the money for more daycare is killing me. $175 a week!! - Plus I have to take a vaction day at work every Friday to attend clinicals- so starting August 20th my schedule will be:
Monday work 9a-5p-
Tuesday class 8a-3p- work 3p-10:30p-
Wed work 9a-5p,
Thursday class 8a-3p and work 3p-10:30p-
Friday I am suppose to work but taking every Friday off as a vacation day to do clinicals 7a-3p. & This is only the first semester- so I am hoping I can make it! I don't know when I will study- probably at night- which means I don't know when I will sleep. I'm sure I will be ok- I am not happy about having to use all of my vacation days to go to school though. I really want a vacation.
