heh...have to laugh because this thread first started in 2002! So, might as well keep it alive and well!

I just found this site from a reference in the book "Everything New Nursing book". I figure I should introduce myself before I start in asking all the questions I have!

Hmmm...where to start. I originally got my degree out of high school in Liberal Arts (BA). My option (similar to a minor) was in Early Childhood Development. I worked in childcare/preschool for several years and as a sub. teacher in elementary schools. When I was 25 we moved to a different state and I became a stay at home mom. I've been home with my three children now for 12 years. Now that my youngest will be starting kindergarden next year, we figure it's time for me to look into returning to the work force.

My soul searching over the last few years brought me to the conclusion that I no longer wish to teach. My desire for the last, about, 7 years has been to become a nurse.

Starting next month I will be going to the local community college to begin my pre-nursing. I'm hoping to enter the ADN program in Fall 2009. The one at this college is 7 quarters at the completion of which you are eligible to take the NCLEX.

So, those are the basics about me and my most immediate goals. Oh, if all goes well I'll be 40 when I graduate. It's reassuring to see other ladies who are older on the boards here starting school. I spoke with one of the counselors in the program and they told me the average age for the students in their program is 35.

Well since this is all new to me, let me introduce myself.

I am just starting nursing school in August 08, RN. I am 37 years old and have wanted to be a nurse since I was in high school. Why I did not go to college right after high school, I will never know. In the meantime, I got a full time job, had a child and got married. I have been working on my pre reqs since 05 and tried three times to get in to my local community college for the RN nursing program. Finally getting my acceptance letter was better than I had anticipated. Being older and so sure of what I want to do when I grow up is the best feeling and knowing that I was "in" was wonderful. When I originally started my prereqs, my goal was to graduate before I was 40. If I go with the 2 year program, I will be 40 and a few months but I did find out there is a 16 month program that I have yet to ask about. That would be great too. At this point I don't care how old I am, I just want to be a nurse.

This is a great website and since finding it this morning, I have already learned so much!

Hello, I am also starting in August 08. Your situation sounds like mine, when I received my letter, I could not help but yell and scream. My husband and 10 year old daughter pretty much did the same. This is a huge, exciting step to my new profession and I could not be happier.

I have not received an official letter yet about orientation but called the school and ours is either in June or July. As far as the CPR certification, I was told by my advisor to wait a little closer to the start date so that the two years does not run out before school is done. Which actually, at this point could be done now and you would still be certified through graduation.

Best of luck to you! I know we are in different states but it was nice to see someone else starting at the same time.

I've been lurking for a while too. I started my journey to be a nurse a while ago...I took all the prereq's before and will start my actual nursing classes in the fall 2008. I am really excited but getting more nervous by the day. I work FT at a hospital and also am married for almost 5 years and have a 4 year old son. Hopefully I can continue to work FT and finish school!

I am a little nervous too, more about the having a husband, child, home and job-part while I am in school. I do plan on cutting back to part time at my job, which will help. And I do believe that if you want something bad enough you will do it no matter what. I think the difficulty of it will only make the end that much sweeter.

Hello everyone. I just became a member. It was encouraging to see other ladies my age starting nursing school. I am 37 and will be 40 when I graduate Dec. 2010. I stayed home with my kids ages 12 and 13 for 11 years. It feels good to know exactly what I want now and my kids and I study together. I love my school here in Memphis and feel so blessed to have been accepted.

Hello everyone I just got the call today that I was accepted for Fall 2008!!! I was an alternate and a spot opened up so I am just thrilled

I have 4 children ages 16, 13, 10 and 6 and I am 37. I will be 41 when I graduate in 2011. Looks like I'm in good company here!
