Have any of you guys ever gone through an interview for a summer internship for nursing students? I have one in about a week, and I REALLY WANT THIS INTERNSHIP!!! so i'm just wondering how to prepare and what kind of questions you guys were asked! i'm sort of nervous... i mean this is definately not a big hospital, it's quite small but that's why i want to work there. so i figured that maybe with it being a smaller hospital the interview questions weren't as tough???? anyone have any input???

I recently had an interview and I would say to brush up on how you handle difficult situations. That is, I had questions like "Tell me about a time when you had a patient with unreasonable needs. How did you handle this situation? Why did you handle it that way? What did you learn from this situation?"

Name a time that you had a disagreement/conflict with a co-worker and how you resolved it.

Heard that one asked several times.

Also maybe questions regarding confidentiality, or how to work with difficutl co-workers, and most importantly - what do you expect to get out of the experience?

Why do you want this internship? Why this facility? Tell me about your past history? What led you to nursing school? What do you like/dislike about school? What skills have you done in clinicals? What are your goals in nursing?

Those are things that come off the top of my head; a lot of those are from recent job interviews, but there some similar when I interviewed for my internship last summer.

I just got an externship and my friend, who just went through 4 months of looking for a job, gave me a mock interview and wrote up typical interview questions. I'm so glad that she did that for me because I was asked 3 or 4 of the questions and had ready answers.

at the end of this I'll cut and paste questions, but I also looked up info on the hospital, ie....tuition forgiveness, when you're vested in the retirement program. Then, at the end, when it was my turn to ask questions, I could tell them "I saw on your website....blah, blah, blah" and ask my questions. I think they were impressed and they were happy that I might be interested in working there when I graduate.

1. Tell me about yourself
*tell about career, family, education

2. What would you do if a co-worker asked you to do something unethical?

3. What if a patient touched you inappropriately. What would you do?

4. Sometimes the interviewer will hand you a piece of paper with a scenario or information on it and say……. Review this information and tell me how you would proceed.

5. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?

6. What other interests do you have outside of work?
*tell about hobbies, volunteering,
My friend told me this is the question to break up the serious ones.


7. What separates you from the other candidates? Why should you be selected?

8. Give me 1-3 words to describe yourself. Why did you pick those words?

9. Would your co-workers say you are a team player?

10. Are there other areas of nursing you are interested in?

11. Describe a situation at work/clinical that made you feel uncomfortable and how did you deal with it?

12. What do you see as your strengths…….
**examples – respectful, compassionate, honest
What are your weaknesses
**Try to make your weakness into a strength

13. If someone in a higher administrative position than your immediate boss came up to you and said do this…..What would you do ?
**Either say…..Yes..but then go check with immediate boss OR I need to check with my immediate boss first.

I had my interview yesterday. I was asked:

1) Tell me about a time you had to make a difficult decision while in the clinical area. What happened? What did you do? What was the outcome?

2) Tell me about a time you feel you went "over and above" for the patient.

3) Tell me about a patient you've had that was rather "involved" (i.e. PEG tube, Central line, Vent, etc.). Tell me about the care you provided, both physically and psychosocially. What about this experience was most challenging for you?

I had an interview that went really well and I was offered a position. Some examples of the tough questions:

1. Tell about a time when your classmates got discouraged and how they (all of you) dealt with it.

2. What was the most difficult decision you have made in the last 6 months, and how did you arrive at that decision?

3. Tell me about something you worked hard on and were successful at and were proud of.

4. Tell me about a time when you made a mistake and how did you deal with it.

5. How would your classmates or coworkers describe your strengths and weaknesses?

That's all I can think of at the moment. And I apologize that they are not worded perfectly. I am so tired today! Been on my feet in clinicals during perhaps the busiest day L&D has ever seen!
