Impact of culture on medical care

I have to give a presentation on the impact of cultural and religious beliefs on medical care. I really don't know much about the Indian (from India) culture any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Impact of culture on medical care

Some nursing books (fundamentals of nsg type), care plan books and ethics books have info. If not in your books, interview a person of Indian descent who is first generation in the US. Call an Indian temple or Christian church (my son's college roommate was from "the Christian part of India").

Above is a link to a good cultural competency article regarding care of the Indian patient. Good luck on your presentation.

Re: Impact of culture on medical care

I actually interviewed someone from India for a cultural project. There are still a lot of tribes in India, and they believe in voodoo rather than modern medicine. Good luck with your research!

Re: Impact of culture on medical care

I remember about 15 years ago my first encounter with the indian culture. Women walk behind the men about 15 paces out of respect. I remember when it came time to walk this patient we had to be creative and get the mail hospital workers to walk beside him. On discharge the Male MD walked him out so that he would not have to be pushed by a woman.

Wish you well with your project. Teelee
