Question Was I suppose to know that?

Here is the deal, I work in an office, I was at the coffee station with my mind on COFFEE . I co-worker ran up to me and said, "Is a pulmonary EM serious?" I was like, what? I don't know. What are you talking about? She goes, You are a nurse, shouldn't you know? . I said, I am going to START nursing school, I am not a nurse yet.

I just felt bad, after walking away, I realized she was talking about a pulmonary EMbolus. I am sorry, I don't think nurse lingo (off the top of my head) yet. My mind was on trying to get thru my diet and nurtirion exam tonight.

I wouldn't feel bad...helloooooo, you're not even a nursing student yet...I am just finishing up my first semester and wouldn't be much help except perhaps to reply as is often done on these boards: I can not give medical advice; the best suggestion is to contact your physician for advice/care. Or tell them to look it up on the web, much as many of us do when we have questions!! Sheesh...

Re: Was I suppose to know that?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I graduate in a few months, and it seems that people in my family are constantly calling me and asking me to diagnose something or comment on something. Whenever I say I don't know I am only a student I get a look of dismay. I put my coffee lid on the counter of the coffee shop while putting my cream and sugar in and I get the lecture you are a nurse and should know better(because of germs). I think it is hillarious. I secretely like it because it really means that they are looking up to us for answers, even if we don't have them now, we will.

I'm a nurse, and I thought, "what the heck is a pulmonary EM?" when I read the post. Nobody around here calls it that, perhaps she just made it up.

Canoehead - that was my first thought - what the heck are we talking about?

Because everyone in my neighborhood knows I'm on the fire dept - I get a lot of weird questions. However, even now as a CNS, I defer to their primary care provider.
