I got a packet of stuff from the school.

Telling me about the nursing orientation and there were two packets, one with medical terms and the other with dosage calculations and medical math. I'm supposed to go over them before the orientation on the 30th. This was odd to me. Did anybody here have to do that?

Re: I got a packet of stuff from the school.

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that my school seems to be similar in this respect.. we received a huge packet the school calls a "self-learning module"- really basic stuff, it seems, that we need to teach ourselves through videos and our lab book- handwashing, bed-making.. We also have to learn dosaging calculations, as the first week of school there's an exam they call "clinical calculations", that needs to be passed- I hate math so I need to start reviewing it right away. Just wanted you to know, you're not alone!!

Re: I got a packet of stuff from the school.

We also received a practice packet. The difference with our school then most is that we have to complete and pass the CNA program and state testing before entering the nursing program. That way we already know bed making, etc. They encourage taking nursing readiness, math for meds, pharmacology and medical terminology from the time you apply to the time of acceptance. Once accepted they offer along with your grueling schedule care plan classes, high risk nursing, success workshops and a condensed math for meds class.

Re: I got a packet of stuff from the school.

We were told about requirements, but math was covered the first week, then tested. Tested 2nd and 4th semesters too. We have a dosage calculation textbook that I've looked at maybe twice.
We are required to have our CNA certification to cover bedmaking, simple tasks, I/Os, etc....plus it's nice to be able to have some skills when you first start.

Still working on prereqs! Do Nursing schools really do this? Give it to you, then tell you that you are on your own? And have to pass it?
