Question? - Hyperoxygenating patients.

WITH mechanical ventilators....can someone explain this to me a bit. I understand what this means to a patient without mechanical ventilation, but not with....

What do you do? Ive never worked with ventilators before.

On vents, you can still have less than 100% fio2, so you give them 100% o2 before suctioning to give them a reserve because suctioning is like having the patient hold their breath. It's like taking a deep breath before going under water. Kinda.

Right, I got that part...so is it just as simple as turning up the oxygen?

Most vents in use today have a hyperO2 button on them. They are in different places on different models. The vents we use only hyperoxygenate for a short period, so you only have to hit the button once- you don't have to turn it off when you're done. Have someone you work with show you where the button is- I'm sure they would be glad to show you.
