Fear of Failure?

I am terrified of failing nursing school. I manage to do well and should not be so worried, but I am. I have so much riding on becoming a nurse. I feel my entire family is in nursing school with me and I don't want to let them down, after all they sacrifice as well. One test bombed, a mistake in clinicals or skills and its over! Anyone else feel this way??

Re: Fear of Failure?

Hi ccstudent
I can relate...its my greatest fear and one I have to face, or maybe have begun facing, as I've never really follow through on any career path I've attempted because of my fear of failure. I already know what it feels like to fail miserably and to be almost kicked out of school. I start NS this fall and my absolute fear is feeling that awful dread that accompanies failing, its the worse thing.
I understand how you feel.

Re: Fear of Failure?

It wouldn't hurt you to get some self help books or CDs on anxiety reducing, relaxation techniques or to get involved in group counseling. An excellent way to reduce stress is to develop a good exercise program and stick to it. If you get involved in these activities, you may find that you are better able to cope with your feelings of anxiety and can better focus your energies on preparation for your classes. Any of these services should be provided by your school at little or no cost to you. Good luck.

Re: Fear of Failure?

I feel the same way!

I've sacrificed so much the last three years doing pre reqs and I start NS in the fall! So much time and money has been invested and I'm so afraid to fail. My husband and children, I feel, have already sacrificed too much!

However, I worked WAY too hard to get into NS and I cannot allow myself to fail. I plan on attending any extra help sessions, open labs and learning groups as much as possible, even if I don't need it!

I think if we all committ ourselves 100% that we will do nothing but succeed!

Re: Fear of Failure?

And remember the saying "One day at a time". Get a good planner, put all of your assignments and study goals in it, and take care of one day at a time. You can pass one day at a time until the end of the semester, then you find that you passed all of the days. Everybody tends to let themselves get overwhelmed by the whole semester at one time, but they forget that they have to get through it one day at a time. Good luck.

Re: Fear of Failure?

I have the same fear of failure...so I've been trying to prepare myself for starting the program this August by reading some of the books that are "recommended" by my school. So far I'm 3 chapters into 'Fluids & Electrolytes Made Incredibly Easy', and have been doing the problems in my 'Math for Meds' book! I realize I may be squandering what little free time I may have before starting this two year rollercoaster, but I really believe I will feel less stressed and more prepared.

Re: Fear of Failure?

Hey hang in there. I think you will find a lot of people here who feel or who have felt the way you do. I did. I worried on a daily basis about "making it" and that I would let alot of people down including myself if I didn't make it.

I remember getting a D in chemistry at midterms, and then finishing with a A. I remember having 3 chances to pass the dosage calc test and not making it on tries one and two. I remember being so angry about that. I had come so far and yet could instantly have everything taken away and have to start over. I passed on last try, and passed the first time when I had to do it again the following semester.

All of the little milestones and bumps in the road, and somehow, I made it. You can do this. Take a step at a time, an assignment at a time. If you try to take on everything at once, you will be overwhelmed. I would do that and freak out. My family were the ones who brought me back down to earth.

Find someone you can talk to when the going is starting to get rough. Take a deep breath and press on!

Re: Fear of Failure?

I agree with the other posts. Hang in there - if you read, read, read and read some more and actually comprehend what you're reading you're good to go. NS takes up 70-80% of your life (well at least for me it does and that's with a FT job). When you have reached a certain point in NS and something takes a turn for the worse it never feels good and that fear of failing does come to haunt you. Fear has been knocking on my door for the past week. . . I failed my 1st test this new term and I never fail tests, plus I've only got 4 more months until graduation and this happens to me. Gee Whiz!!!!

Good Luck and don't let fear get you down. You can do it. Have confidence in yourself and you'll get through it. Hey, even if you do fail a test, class, etc. don't give up. . . keep on going. It all depends on how bad you really want it.
