Civil War Nurses - Antigone

Hello again. I am writing a creative writing paper for my Greek Literature course. The task is to write your own production of a Greek Play and describe set, cast, costume, what you would change, etc.

I have picked Antigone by Sophocles. I have decided to change the era from ancient Greece to the Civil War era. One brother fights for the south, one for the north, Creon is a Southern general, Antigone and her sister Ismene are nurses, Haimon is a young officer serving under his father Creon, Teiresias will be a preacher, and I am changing the chorus into the family slaves and they will sing the choral interludes as gospel hymns.

I need help finding a website that describes the costumes and tasks of civil war nurses.

TIA

Re: Civil War Nurses - Antigone

Is this for N. school? It sounds intriguing.

Women then wore floor-length hoop skirts, long sleeves. Somehow, Clara Barton comes to mind and Mary Ann "Ma" Bickerdyke. I believe that soldiers' female family members often accompanied them to the front to cook, sew, nurse, and the like. I don't think the military had its own actual nurses or, if it did, the nurses received terrible pay, if any, and no pensions, benefits, or recognition.

I know of no web sites but a librarian could probably help. Or the military archivists.

so this is what I found:
this is Mother Bickerdyke:
http://www.joanbramsch.com/history/bickerdyke.shtml

this is in the museum:
http://www.civilwarmed.org/exhibits.cfm

this is what Civil War nurses wore:
http://www.edinborough.com/Learn/cw_...%20Attire.html

this is Angels of the Battlefield:
http://www.civilwarhome.com/civilwarnurses.htm

this is Civil War clothing: (dresses and soldier)
http://www.clicket.com/costume/hallo...mes/civil.html

there was one site about Sarah Emma Edmonds (I think), a nurse
who disguised herself as a soldier (Frank Thompson)

Thank you so much Trudy and Ginger! You gave me a great idea with this. There is a part in the play where Antigone buries her fallen brother who was declared an enemy. I think I will have her disguise herself as a soldier to do it.

This class takes care of my lit requirement for my bachelors.

Thanks again.

YOW, this could be a HUGE undertaking!

Look up "re-enactments" in your search engine, you may even be able to find people that do them locally! (I know that we do here)

Just found a page with images of civil war nurses:

Re: Civil War Nurses - Antigone

I was just reading and looking at pictures on the www.edinborough.com site mentioned above. Gad, but Dorothea Dix was just like some of the people we nurses encounter today - more focused on what we should wear than on good patient care. I know her goal was to give the latter but do marvel at and am repulsed by her being such a stickler about the nurses' garb.
