Re: ACCEPTED to Nassau Community College Fall 08

I'm about to finish my first year in nursing at NCC.

My #1 piece of advice: Get your Kozier fundamentals of nursing textbook early and start reading. This book will become your BIBLE for semester one. I kid you not, I carried that thing everywhere with me.

Get a decent stethoscope, but you don't need to go overboard (I've heard of students here buying Littman Cardiology steths and stuff.. I have a $25 sprague style plain jane stethoscope and it suits me just fine. I'd rather go cheap than worry about someone stealing my stuff!)

Take a lesson in patience.(patients?! no pun intended) You'll need it. Not all of the professors are nice, as in any other school, but they're very smart and can really teach you if you're open to listening.

You don't know where you're going for clinical yet, do you?

Re: ACCEPTED to Nassau Community College Fall 08

thank you and thank you for the advice...im gonna buy that book(is that the book the every prof uses for NUR 101?)....I became a CNA a few months ago, im excited to have my foot in the door somewhat i guess with the intro stuff which I imagine is the same...how to treat patients and rules & regulations

not sure yet about clinicals...the orientation/class registration is on may 20th(i finished everything except for the 4 nursing classes already so i only have 1 class to register for which is NUR 101)

Re: ACCEPTED to Nassau Community College Fall 08

I just finished 101 with a B+!!! I thought I might not make it midway.. then I ended up making it pretty darn well! AlliMarie is right in everything she said! Try to relax and not take things to heart. You will learn so much even in your first 3 weeks of school its unbelievable! Alli. I have to buy the Med Surg book in 2 sections and sell my HUGE version of it! So that would be my advice! Get the 1st and 2nd editions of the Med Surg book because Its impossible to read anything with a book that weighs 200 lbs!!

Re: ACCEPTED to Nassau Community College Fall 08

Haha I have the twelve pound, one-edition style MedSurg book (got a great deal on some website for it) and it's hard to lug around!

And yes, AnotherMale... Koziers Fundamentals of Nursing and Brunner and Suddarth's Medical-Surgical Nursing are used for all NUR 101/105 groups.

I got an A in 105 I'm officially a second year student!

Re: ACCEPTED to Nassau Community College Fall 08

A lot of people said it was harder than 101. I found it to be slightly harder, but comparable. The hardest thing is the increased workload: you have to write a process record every week, along with whatever else is going on, and the process record has to be up to 105 standards which are increased and makes the whole thing a little longer and harder to complete. Not impossible, though. Just stay ahead on your reading and write a process record every week, even if the teachers tell you that you don't have to write every week. You'll be glad you did when you've passed all the NPRs you need to and everyone else in your class is falling behind while you have time to study for the final.

Brunner and Suddarth's Med-Surg Nursing is the 105 bible, you will need it all the time, so make sure you have it with you. Another good investment would be a book of laboratory/diagnostic tests with nursing implications because you'll be writing D-Records (Diagnosis Records) every week and you have to list lab/dx tests with nursing implications, which is a little tricky without a good book.

You'll be fine. Relax, enjoy your summer.
