Just a lowly ASN...

Don't get hung up on what I said about A's versus C's... My major point was that NS is tough for several very good reasons. There are some, and maybe it is the 10% you refer to (however I think it is more) that seem to just get by with lots of excuses. I study with several C+ to B students and I think they are going to make excellent nurses. My comments about the A vs. C was directly attacking the all to frequent comment on this board that "C students usaully make better nurses than A students". I just don't get that mentality at all. It takes hard work, compassion and yes smarts to be a good nurse. If you are a smart C student so be it.

Anyway, enough said...my intention is never to offend anyone just pointing out some of the obvious as I see it in my rose colored glasses.

Now let me get back to studying.

Actually this is actually very liberal, in my school each component of every nursing course had to be passed with at least 80-85% . And the final can be considered a component.

As a nurse, you can work very hard every day, but the day that you only work 75% of your ability can be the day that harms someone. You cannot slack just because you have worked 100% on all other days of your career. And your nursing school policy is a reflection of that.

This means also when you get out of school, you get plenty of sleep before work, that you keep most of your personal issues out of the workplace, you show up on time everyday, etc. You are getting practice in school that should carry over to your workplace as a good habit.

Thanks for the replys. I personally don't like the rule but what can you do. Like Dave said if you do well all semester then you will probably be okay. But as another poster pointed out, what if something arises before the final that causes you to do not as well as expected and you fail the class. I feel that if you bomb the final and your overall grade is under a 77 then you should not pass, but if you don't do as good on the final and your grade is still above a 77 because you did well on previous coursework then you should pass.

I don't want anyone to think I am complaining, I was just curious as to if other schools have the same rule. I understand that nursing school is hard and no one should expect anything less. I don't think I will have a problem with the rule, but I don't think it is fair either. One thing that I do find is that when people whine and complain it is because they are not confident in their abilities. I had a girl in class that complained all the time about everything. Once she got help with her studies and started to do better we never heard her complain again.

Wow! Do you know how many student in my class would fail if that were the requirement?? We are very liberal as well. Under 75% is considered an F, but we take a cumulative score into consideration. However, if you get 2 tests under 70%, then you are pulled from clinicals, which in turn fails you from the program.

In my program you have to have an 80% average on all test. The last final I took the was 22% of that average. When you think of how many people you would kill being right 4 out of 5 times it's not so bad. It's kinda scary either way.

In my ADN program unit exams count 70% of your grade, homework assignments count 10%, and the comprehensive final exam counts 20%.

I guess if the other grades are high enough you can "afford" to fail the final, but I honestly don't see how anybody could study well enough to pass all the unit exams and not retain enough material to pass the final??

Yes. my school also has that same rule. It is a little frusturating, but then again, I wouldn't want a nurse to take care of me unless she got at LEAST a 77%. We also have a rule at our school that there is NO TEST REVIEWS. We are not able to see our tests to know what we missed and the teachers do not go over the correct answers. How can you learn if you don't know what your weak points are? The instructors will email you the frequently missed topics (by the whole class) and they think you can learn by that. I think it's silly, but they didn't ask my opinion when making the rules

No test review doesn't make much sense to me. If you don't know what you missed individually, how can you possibly know what you need to work on more? I supposed if you go through all the topics the entire class missed you would see what you weren't familiar with but I don't think that's the most effective approach.

In order to pass a course we have to get a 77% final grade (total of all exams cumulative). If you don't get a 77 you are kicked out of the program.

We have to maintain a 3.0 GPA. We are allowed ONE C in the entire program. If we get more than one or our GPA drops below a 3.0 more than ONCE we are OUT. No questions asked no refund. We have to pass ALL of our dosage calcs with a 100%.
