Thinking about school nursing

I have been thinking about different areas of nursing outside of the hospital, where I have been for 15 years. At this point I need a change. I have been in med-surg during that time. I feel that school nursing might be a good choice, but with no pediatric/school nursing experience is this a possibility? Also, having young children I like this area too. Any input would be great.

Re: Thinking about school nursing

I was reading back through the forum and noticed this had no replies. I think that as long as you have an orientation that makes you feel comfortable and a good network of one or two other school nurses in your district you can call in a pinch you should go for it. Your hospital experience puts you ahead of the curve as far as thinking on your feet and responding in acute situations. You could always find out if you could shadow a school nurse in your area for a day or two and see if you're still interested.

Re: Thinking about school nursing

When I began as an elementary school nurse 8 years ago my previous experience had also been med-surg rather than pedi. I found that my med-surg experience coupled with my experience as a parent (4 grown children and 2 1/2 grandchildren--#3 due in the Spring) served me just fine. A bunch of prof development courses (vision and hearing screening etc) was all it took to get me started. It's a super job. In my town the pay is good and the hours terrific. I've never been sorry I left bedside nursing.

I'm thinking about school nursing too and might sign up to be a sub to see if I like it. Check your local school district's website to see if they need subs, and try it out.
