Hello everyone. I recently applied to be a school nurse substitute because I think I want to do it later on down the line full time, so I figured I would get a feel for it etc. Only thing, I now accepted a FT hospital job so I don't think I can commit to much subbing. Instead of doing about once a week or so I probably would only be able to do once a month (tops). Should I not sign up to be a sub at all right now? Would they hate me if I signed up and couldn't work as much as they expect? Or as a sub, would it be fine of I am MIA for a while and only pick up a day very rarely? I guess it varies where you work... but what about your district? Thanks.

Subbing is definitely a good way to get your foot in the door of school nursing.
Now I want to qualify that by saying that it is good to be available whenever you get that call. It will go against you if you are called and you refuse multiple times. You will find that the calls will taper off and then you will stop getting them altogether.

In my district, we are so desperate for subs, we would take you on your terms. If there was an opening and you could only come in for 1/2 day, whatever, we'd take you. Of course, if you aren't available much, you'd probably get moved to the bottom of the list to be called, but chances are, you'd still get more calls than you want.
