Question Getting started in school nursing.

I am a RN in the Pittsburgh area. I am interviewing for a position as a school nurse. The wages seems very low to me. Can anyone give me as ideal of the "going" hourly wages for a school nurse???

Thanks

Re: Getting started in school nursing.

I don't know numbers but the little research that I have been doing in various states and cities, it seems school nurses make less than hospital nurses. I am guessing one does not become a school nurse for the money. Good luck.

Well, here in Dallas one school is as low $37,000 and 10 miles away another starts at $43,000 a year divided over 12 months is around $3000-$4000 take home. Hope that helps.

Re: Getting started in school nursing.

If you're interviewing for a public school in Pittsburgh, you'll probably fall into the teacher's salary schedule. Where I work, without experience and only a bachelor's + certification, you start out at about 33,000. Different school districts are different depending on the teacher's contract. You'll be in the teacher's union. You usually get good benefits and the WONDERFUL work schedule you can't get in the hospital. Some school nurses I know work casual in local hospitals to pick up extra money and work more in the summer. As for me, when I got out of the hospital, I RAN as fast as I could and never looked back. You have to decide which is more important to you, money or a job you love. (assuming you love school nursing and hate the hospital).
Good luck getting the job-if you get it PM me and let me know where you are!

Re: Getting started in school nursing.

I just graduated and have a part time school nurse position. I started today and I love it.Its about $22/hr, but like the "school Nurse" said , you can work part-time at another hospital while doing school nursing. I think its fun and intresting working with the Pediatric population.
