Where is the best place to look for finding a school nursing job. I've worked in med surg for 16yrs and am now in home health-which I want to leave. I've never did school nursing, so I'm a little nervous about it, but thought it might be interesting and also good because I have 3 kids (scheduling wise with days off, etc).

offer to sub in the district that your kiddos go to. That is how a lot of the nurses I know have gotten in.

I am curious about this too. I work in an ER right now and would like to fill some of my free time and I was curious how to get involved. I know with public schools you can contact the district and offer to sub, but what about private schools? The high school I went to was a private one and I thought about maybe taking a day or two in a private school. Is there some special list to get on for subbing in a private school?

If I wanted a job at a school, private or otherwise, I'd contact the school first.

I did school nursing for a long time and recently left. Coming from a hospital environment to an educational environment might be difficult. School staff and even some parents don't understand the nurse's role in the school setting and will treat you badly, like you are working in a school because you can't get a job anywhere else and are stupid. For a long time I tried to think it was worth it for the good schedule (no weekends/holidays, school vaca off), but after 10 years of listening to teachers belittle me, I left. MUCH happier where I am now. Also, one point to consider is if you have to cover more than one school, which is commonplace. Deligation to non-licensed personnel is dangerous and scary. School administrators don't care about the scope of nursing practice or state nurse practice acts. Be careful whAT YOU WISH FOR

Thank you. Where are you working now? I just left home health and trying to figure out what I want to do next.
