I recently changed my first supra pubic catheter -------when I removed the old catheter, I did not realize the site would continue to drain urine....needless to say, the patient was wet before I got the other catheter inserted......how do you quickly insert the new catheter using sterile technique after you remove the old one, if you don't have time to clean the site with betadine and put the sterile drape down? not to mention keep your gloves sterile?
The patient doesn't wear a bag; he plugs the end of the tube, so if I drained the urine from his bladder, would that help in allowing me more time to get the old out and the new in? Or not make a difference?
