questions about dialysis

Back in nursing school one of the instructors mentioned that patients sometimes die during dialysis. She made it sound like it was not uncommon. How critical of a job is dialysis and do you expect a certain number of patients to die during the procedure? What usually goes wrong?

Re: questions about dialysis

Dialysis is a very serious duty and is not for every one. I am a former dialysis nurse, who loved the job and the clients, but learned that it has a very dark side. You must understand that during the process, a lot the body's blood supply is going out of the body at any given time and the rate at which it is circulated is increased. Just with this information, there are a number of possible things that can happen, based on the individual's physical condition and ability to tolerate the process. No there are not a specify percentage of individuals that we expect to die during dialysis, but it does happen. We just have to be prepared for the unexpected when it does. There is a protocol to follow to save one's lfe during dialysis and everyone in the facilty should know it.
