penile implants

I need to know a standard of care issue regarding penile implants. Our Urologist is asking RN's to catheterize a patient post op penile implant for not voiding. They have had a catheter intraop, but it was pulled prior to arrival to outpatient area.
Are other nurses straight cathing post op implants?

I don't know. That's exactly why I got into dialysis to aviod the penis. I had one pt. (an amputee) who had one put in and I had to check it for infection. Believe me, I gave the Dr. hell when he got to the unit because that was a disgusting situation. WUGH!

The urethra should be unchanged, depending on type of implant you may be faced with an erect penis, just perform your cath as you would on any male, if it is erect you may try pulling it up toward the chest, actually this works flaccid as well it creates a straight shot as it were. Good Luck

Jaquar: sorry for such a time lag responding to your question, this is the first time I have stopped in this area.
I have over the years, done many penile implants. The method we use, the urethra is not opened or entered. We put a 16/5 foley in during the procedure and then leave it for a couple of days post op.
The implant is partially inflated, and we tape the foley to the abd. for security.
I'm sure you know, post op urine retention is a major concern, more so when working any where around the urinary tract.
Depending on the system being used, there shouldn't be too much trouble cath ing someone post op. But, if there is some sort of urethral anastomosis, like done during radical prostetectomy, you have to be carefull.
Hope that helps.
p.s. the system we use is from AMS american medical systems, home based in Minn. somewhere.
