I'll be starting school to obtain a BSN. Ultimately, my goal is to get an MSN and work in Case management. I am more than willing to work the floor to gain experience, but I know that working in the office is better suited for me personally in the long run.

I was wondering if working in the rehab floor right out of school is good experience and would hold alot of wieght in order to pursue other related careers in nursing. If not, what areas would be essential to gain that experience.

If you are interested in Case Management, working in rehab would be a great place to get experience! Rehab is part of the continuum in healthcare and a necessary one for some patients. It will allow you to see how patients progress after leaving acute care. It will also give you insight into the discharge care issues/delimmas facing patients and families of chronically ill/disabled patients. Are you interested in insurance Case Management or hospital Case Management? I am currently a Case Manager for a 25 bed acute inpatient rehab. I don't know where you are located, but a Master's in Nursing is not required to be a Case Manager in Mississippi. Not that having an MSN is not a bonus. Also, Case Management in a hospital or rehab setting is not an office job. The Case Managers of our acute hospital are out on the nursing unit every day seeing patients and interacting with their families/sig. others. They are rarely in their "offices." Responsibilities of Case Managers in the acute rehab setting also require interaction with patients and families on a daily basis and is not an "office job" per se. If by "working in an office" you mean working 8-5, M-F, then yes, some Case Managers do that....lol. Hope this helps.
