I'm a psychiatric/forensics travel nurse and was wondering if anyone can tell me good or bad experiences in Hospitals they work so I'll know in advance if I should take assignments there. I'll be working either the S.E. or N.E. for the forseeable future. Thanks

It would seem much more practical to ask your agency, when given a potential assignement, for the names and phone numbers of a couple of their nurses who have worked there (or to forward your info to them, if security/privacy is a concern) rather than trying to collect data, which is always subject to change, on the hundreds of psych facilities in the SE and NE.

Thanks for the reply Zoe, I've asked my agency several times before my last assignment for names of other nurses to contact but he never gave them to me. I guess he may of been afraid of what they would of said, possibly. (this assignment is very good) I'm looking for general comments on other peoples experiences at psych. facilities as some are good and some not so good. Thanks, travel2lv

In other words, you don't think your agency is being up front with you and don't trust them. And they don't trust you with information adequate in order for you to make an informed decision about accepting a job. A good reason to work for a DIFFERENT agency, IMHO.

But you might want to see what others think on the "agency nurses" or "travel nursing" forums.

Hi,
I work in VT. Have had some great travelers I've really enjoyed working with. We have a 2 unit facility, good staff, old building. High cost of living here. One unit's locked, the other unlocked. What I really like which is different from some other places I've worked is that very physically threatening clients are usually placed in the state hospital within 24 hours if not sooner. Staffing patterns generally aren't too bad although they do work sometimes during the day with 2 and evening with 3 if lots of call ins.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in Az. now and have decided to work here for awhile. I'm being trained to work in a smaller hosp. doing medsurg, gulp. It's the only work avail. My husband has to stay here because of Dr's. Where you work sounds pretty good. I miss psych nursing already and I've just started this job.
