Training/Education for Psychiatric Nurse?

Hi all,

I am a uk trained Psychiatric nurse with 10 years experience in Acute admissions and Secure care. I have passed nclex and am waiting for visas to open so I can nurse here.

While I am currently studing here in the usa waiting for visas to open I am wondering what are the best courses to take to increase my chances of getting a job in Psychiatric nursing? What post RN training have you all done? I have a degree in Behavioural Psychology also but was wondering if studying Criminal Justice was a good idea or any help?

Re: Training/Education for Psychiatric Nurse?

It would probably help to take the ANCC specialty certification exam http://www.nursecredentialing.org/ . Recent trainings in Chemical Dependency, Suicide Assessment, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, etc. I don't think Criminal Justice would help unless you want to work in the criminal justice system.

With your experience, I think you'll have no problem getting a good job even if you do nothing extra to prepare. So if you decide instead you would rather goof off and enjoy the Spring, go right ahead!
