oxygen for seizures in psych patients??

Hi everyone

I had a patient seize the other day, I had never seen that before. He was hyperventilating, shaking, etc. Got vitals, gave ativan IM , and basically kept hime safe until it subsided. Are seizures also usuallly treated with oxygen? If someone is hyperventilating, is O2 a bad idea? If giving O2 to a seizure patient,
which form is best? nasal cannula? Any information about treating emergency seizing patients would be appreciated thanks!

Re: oxygen for seizures in psych patients??

A pt's airway can be compromized during seizure activity. I had a pt. become cyanotic and decreased 02 sat during a seizure. I assist pt. with maintaining an open airway, check pulse ox and give o2 when a pt. has a seizure.

I would always give high flow O2 to a fitting pateint within hospital as already mentioned there is the potential for airway comprimise and post fit if drugs given there may be respiratory depression.
