I wanted to let everyone know that I am leaving psych. I have not been at it for very long but the facility I work for has been low censusing us by 12 hours or more a week. I just cant afford to lose that much money. Not sure how I am going to pay all my bills but I guess I will figure it out.

When I was hired they never said a word about cutting our hours during the summer months when the census is lower. I am very upset with this facility for missrepresenting themselves. I had left a full-time job, where I could pay my bills for what? To be sent home on a regular basis.

Well I went out and found another job. It is 38 miles from here, but the pay is more than I make now and they said they "do not" low census their nurses. I will work full-time nights. It is only 8 hour shifts, so I will miss my 12's but that is about it. I will be working in LTC and the hospital.

Wow, that was quick! But I'm pretty sure you're making the best choice, given the scary work conditions you described in other posts. We all have to look out for our own best interests, because our employers sure aren't ... I hope that your new position will work out well for you, and maybe you'll get another chance to try psych at a better facility in the future!

Thanks for all your replys ellpark! Yes it was very quick. I am sure it is difficult to find night nurses, especially in a small community. They really wanted me to work for them. They said they really felt like I was the type of person they were looking for. I have always interviewed well, I am easy to get along with and there are not many people that I dont get along with. I am looking forward to the challenge and having a steady paycheck.

I like my co-workers where I am at now, they are wonderful and I will miss them. "But I will not miss the way this facility is run". I am hoping for the best.

Too bad they weren't up front with you from the get go. Better to go now than wait till later when you're more invested and poorer to boot. May you find happiness at your new position. Nursing is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get till you bite into it. Best of everything.

I'm sorry to hear that you are leaving Psychiatric Nursing. Are there other Psych facilities or units out there near you? I hope you don't let one facility ruin your thoughts about Psychiatric Nursing. I just started at a state hospital here in PA and its going great so far. Good Luck to your new job!

Sorry to hear you will be leaving psych!! I admire your obvious dedication and interest in learning a new area of nursing. That said, like others, I did have concerns about ratios and safety in your previous posts. Psych skills are useful in every aspect of nursing. So best of luck at your new job, maybe we'll welcome you back to the crazy world of psych in the future.
