Summer Practicum

I will soon be attending summer practicum/externship on a pulmonary unit and would like to know how I can best prepare for this area as a student. Thanks

Re: Summer Practicum

What a wonderful opportunity!! I was an RRT prior to becoming an RN. Working with pulmonary patients is going to be a good learning experience for you. Some nursing students hate the pulmonary floor....I myself, LOVED it...but I was a "snot-loving" RRT for years before I enterend nursing school!! Seriously tho....there is nothing more frightening than not being able to breathe. Do not wear perfume or any scented product, including deodorant....some pulmonary patients are extremely sensitive to it. Find time to just hold a patient's hand...they are scared and human compassion will carry you a long way. This holds true for all patients....not just pulmonary patients. Find a good mentor....make friends with the Respiratory Therapist....they will teach you many things. Good Luck...I hope you enjoy your summer externship.

Thank you so much for your help. I do feel very grateful for the opportunity, and it sounds like it will be a great learning experience.
