You could try to apply with the state of Florida. Go to the department of health website and you could apply online. Realize that the state pays less than the hospital, but the benefits make up for it.

What you refer to as a health visitor is generally known as a home health nurse. Here in Florida, one does not need a degree in public health, only a license as a RN or LPN. There are county Health Departments but they generally provide only basic health care and I do mean basic. You can find out by going to the couny website you plan to live in. Suggest you start working on your Florida license first.

www.doh.state.fl.us
Click on the link on the left hand side that says nursing. From there you should be able to access the online app. If you have any questions, let me know.

Re: public health nursing in florida

I don't think there is a US equivilant to a Health Visitor. I had my first daughter in England and second in the US. I really missed the health visitors advice and visits the second time around. Home Health nursing is nothing like Health Visiting and not even really like District Nursing.
Do you know where in Florida you want to live. I have just interviewed for a School Nurse position and here in Broward county that is a Board of Health position. I know they staff the free clinics in the county and have full time nurses working at the Health Dept. in fort Lauderdale.

Re: public health nursing in florida

What is known as Public Health Nursing or District Nursing, in England, is what I did when I was a nurse with the Brooklyn Visiting Nurses Association. We did home visits, monitoring the health and care of post op patients, medical patients, chronically ill children, pre and post patum visits, well baby assessments, to name a few. It was not unusual to pick up another patient during a home visit. Or to do health teaching to neigbors, sitting on their stoop. What is available, here in Florida, today is nothing like what I use to do. It doesn't even come remotely close.

Hi Sunqueen,

I too live in Broward County and can not locate how to find open positions in the free clinics. Do you have a website that can help me? I did find position for health dept but not any for the small clinics. Thanks

I know the Health Dept. runs three free clinics in Broward. I think the North Broward Hospital District may have some too. I don't know about any smaller clinics.
