Nursing Resources for Reproductive Health/STI's

Hi everyone! I am a cardiac telemetry RN at a large hospital in MN. I just accepted a volunteer clinic nurse position at my local Planned Parenthood as well. I am curious if anyone has suggestions for nursing resources. I am new to the contraceptives/STI/reproductive systems/women and men's health aspect of nursing, but am very interested in it. I am into public health (have my PHN) and am currently working on my M.S.N in education. I figured PP would be a great place to expand on this.

Any books or websites would be great. The only books I could find are geared toward medical doctors and not necessarily for nurses. Thanks!

-Jason

PP has tremendous resources; have you asked them directly? They also have training manuals and workshops for contraceptive counseling for their employees. Look up the CDC website for the CDC 2006 STI treatment guidelines.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health is a premier resource as well:
http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/sfcityclinic...nteredCare.pdf
You can look up individual diseases in the Health Information menu:
http://www.sfdph.org/DPHMenu.htm
San Francisco City Clinic
http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/sfcityclinic/
look at the menu on the left for "STD Basics" and "Ask Dr. K."
One of the "bibles" as well is Hatcher's "Contraceptive Technology." You can get a pocket version for clinic.
This should get you started!

Thanks so much, these are great resources! If anyone finds more, please feel free to share. I am going through orientation right now and officially start at the end of the month. I look forward to working with this patient population.

Re: Nursing Resources for Reproductive Health/STI's

Hi- Ditto pp re PP's resources. (this is kind of late, I've never visited this board before).

Also, Contraceptive Technology by Robert Hatcher is sort of the bible of contraception for many people. A new edition just came out. He also writes a book called Managing Contraception, which is a pocket sized one. They are geared toward providers but written in very clear & easy to understand ways.

Also, check out the WHO's medical eligibility criteria document, it provides a lot of guidelines for different contraindications and use in various populations. http://www.who.int/reproductive-heal...lications/mec/

As far as STD's go, you can read a lot of info on the CDC's website as well as ASHA (american social health association).

Not sure if you're going to be dealing w/ colpo's and whatnot, but the ASCCP's website has all of those updated rec's. (again, provider driven but a good resource)

Hope you enjoy your volunteer work!
