health issues letter help

I don't know if this is the correct place to post (this is my 1st time posting), but I will still ask. I am a nursing student and I have to write a health issues letter for class. The issue has to relate to community health or any community services (for example, teen pregnancy, school health, elderly, etc.) ... pretty much anything. The sad thing is that I can't think of anything to address. I've been sitting here for an hour and still nothing So I was wondering if any of the public/community health nurses on here could give me ideas on issues or concerns I could write about that you may encounter in public health nursing. Thank you so much for your help.

The Maternal and Child Health Library might provide you with some interesting MCH public health issues to write about. the url is http://www.mchlibrary.info Click on annotated resource guides on the left for additional topics.

Good Luck.

Re: health issues letter help

As far as public health issues, you could address the new immunization table that was just issued for Jan. 2006. Go to www.cdc.gov and search immunizations. As a side issue, the supposed connection between autism and the MMR vaccine is being discussed again.

Another issue is confidentiality of reportable infectious diseases. When I was filling in for a friend in a local city health dept., part of my duties involved contacting people with one or more of these diseases and offer assistance, referrals, educational material, etc. One patient hadn't been told yet by her doctor and I ended up having to be the one to break the news to her.

Just some stray thoughts - hope they help!

I worked in Public Health for ten years, and we never ran short of issues: Teen Pregnancy is a biggie, can cost a community a lot of money. Immigrant health, PH is a major provider. Smoking Cessation, Cancer control and education. Bioterrorism is an emerging issue. Communicable Disease - TB is on the rise in a lot of communities. The possibilities are endless. Suggest you visit the website of your local Health Department for ideas
