Question Best acute care setting to prepare for PHN career

Hello all,

I am a BSN student and I want to be a PHN. Most jobs in my area require a minimum of 1 year acute care experience to be considered for the position. What is the area that will best prepare me for a career in public health nursing?

Emergency Room? assessment, rapid intervention...
Med-Surg? diversity, broad based skills, and chronic conditions...
Critical-Care? assessment and critical thinking...

These are the areas I am considering and I just want any advice or opinions regarding this matter.

Thanks!!!

Re: Best acute care setting to prepare for PHN career

this may be a bit late..
i was in your boat when i started out 4 years ago. I did my first year on an infectious disease med unit b/c my gut told me that I could learn be comfortable there. that was the most important thing for me to conquer as a new nurse. all of the specialities you mentioned would be looked upon well by future PH employers. The ED especially is a good option b/c you'll be working at the community's doors AND you will be doing critical care nursing.
but don't sweat it too much, just go on interviews and see which feels right for your needs right now.
