will i be happy????

Hello everyone

I currently work in an ER doing 3, 12 hour shifts 7a-7pm. I have a one year old and like only working 3 days. I at the same time am so fed up with the chaos of the ER and feel like I am getting burned out quickly. I had an interview at a cardiology office, the hours are 8:30am-5pm, no weekends or holidays. I was called back for a second interview and it went well. All signs point to them hiring me. Will I be happy is the big question. Its more time away from my baby but at the same time I don't want to be stressed anymore because I feel like lately i am bringing that stress home. Please help me with any advice on this tough decision.....thanxs

Re: will i be happy????

Evecel,

I'm in the running for the exact same job description, hours and all. If I hadn't checked to see where you are, I would have thought we were competing for the same position.

You are in NJ right? I'm in Washington state. It'll be interesting to see if we both get the job. I think I'm finding out today.

Re: will i be happy????

Hi there! I work full time in a surgeons office/outpatient surgery center with M-F, 8-5 hours. I has worked very well for me since I have a young child with school hours and babysitter hours that prohibit me from dropping of before 7am and pick up by 530-6. The benefits are great and it is more flexible when you need time off for appointments and such. I would imagine it's a little trickier working in the hospital with patient assignments. However, the pay is not so great, nor are the raises (some of the benefits make up for this though), and there is not much room for advancement, at least not where I work. And I am often envious of my friends who do 3 12's and have time off to spend with their kids/families, have appt's w/o taking vacation or unpaid time off, have more options for schoool...

I also work prn in the ED to make extra $$$, usually nights, and occasionally 12 hour shifts.

I will starting back to school for FNP in May and may have to consider leaving my M-F job to accomodate for clinical, as my particular here job cannot be done on a part-time basis unless I can talk my employer into job sharing with another part-timer. Anyways, I have considered staying prn in the ED and doing 3 12's when that time comes. I am actually excited about that because I can make just as much doing that as I am now working 2 jobs.

So in other words...it's all about what you want and where you are less stressed. The office is less stressful most days, but I find in the ED, if I am with my night girls, if I get stressed, they are right there to help.

Thumbs up Re: will i be happy????

I work in a family practice office and I love it!! The nights I can be at home with my kids(8 and 1yr olds). Plus get nice perks like holdidays off and less stress. Also free lunches(drug reps), samples of meds if needed, and mostly free office visits. Good luck!
