We currently have standing orders that address past medical history risk for anesthesia and the associated lab, xray, or EKG. The problem we are having is that the surgeons offices are leaving them blank and leaving it up to us to do the orders. They say they are not qualified to do pre-op assessments(hahaha). Some of the problems associated with this is that we are a small OR, CRNA covers 24/7and can't run a clinic, we are logistically away from registeration, and if we order the testing we have to write it as a verbal order and send the patient back to Outpatient !!!!! So.....my question is....who does the pre-op assessment in your facility? Who clears them for surgery? thanks, nellie

I work in a surgeon's office where we schedule surgeries to be preformed at the hospital. We schedule a pre-op H & P with the patient's primary physician who then clears the patient, or not, for surgery. There is a pre-op form that the primary physician sends to the admission dept at the hospital along with any labs, X-ray, EKG, stress test that the primary doc may feel necessary to clear the pt for surgery. There are some tests that are required by anesthesia for particular pts, based on age and health conditions.

Yes, the patient's primary practitioner does the pre-op exams for us too.
