I found a clinic position that I might be interested in at one of our affiliated clinics. The hours that are posted are 8AM to 5PM. I'll ask this question in the interview, but I wanted to ask clinical nurses here.

Even though the hours are 8 - 5, how often do you have to stay overtime to get all the work finished? Does 8 to 5 really mean 8 to 7?

I work in a behavioral health clinic and stay late almost every day............paperwork!! Every little call requires documentation. Treatment plans, Medicaid authorizations, etc.

It depends on the position and the specialty you work in. I worked in the clinic since 1994 and I had more days where I got out of work on time but of course there can be the occasional late night. Most place try to keep the overtime down. Good luck to you!

I work in a fam practice clinic and my hours are 8-5. We are usually there until 5:30, sometimes a little later than that. I also try to get to work 15 min early in the morning to work on paperwork left from the previous day. HTH.

I work in a surgical private pratice. My hours are 7:30-4:30. There have been times that I went home at 9:00 pm! It depends on the specialty.

A lot depends on your position, As lpn, I'm there until the Dr. is done, but it is rare that we stay over, usually no more than a few times a month. The Rn's are usually out on time, But I have seen them still at their desk at 5pm, again very rare. Also some departments vary, I hear our dermatology dept. requires some later hours, not sure if its a scheduling issue, or if they are always behind.
After 20 plus yrs of OT, and mandatory OT, and weekends and holidays, I find the clinic life is for me, with weekends and holidays off.

In my job, 5pm (6pm in my case) means 5pm. I wwork until 6pm, and there are times when I don't finish until 6:15. But that's about it. Any later than that, and I'm being kicked out the door!

I rarely stay late......but I could....paper work is never ending.
