Looking for uplifting posts!!

What is your specialty? What is your favorite thing about office nursing? OR Do you have an amusing story to share?

Looking forward to hearing from all the wonderful office nurses with hearts of gold!!

PS. I work Internal Med and my favorite thing about office nursing is the relationships I am able to develop with our patients.

My Amusing story.. A few weeks ago on a stormy summer eve the physician and I were the only staff members working late clinic. We had one last patient and her son enter the door between loud cracks of thunder and brilliant lightening. Our very large female patient had acute bronchitis which of course exacerbated her COPD. She was dyspneic but holding her own with her portable O2. As the doctor finished his exam we lost all power. I had been instructed to give Rocephin.

Okay.. we all know about mixing that Golden liquid with lidocaine and doing the shake. The thunder rolled, the rain beat loudly on our Southern clinic flat roof and I mixed and danced. That was manageable with the assistance of the doc holding the flashlight for me (now there is a switch "doctor assist :-)"

But the amusing part came as we attempted to give this injection in a large muscle.. yep it is defintely one for the gluteal and our 250 pound patient had a flowing and I do mean flowing Satin KIMONO. The doc tried to hold the flashlight and the skirt up and the underwear down.(of course another nurse could have done this easily.. after all we nurses have at least four hands) This lady is huffing and puffing and laughing hysterically which only made her more dyspneic. I was trying to make certain my aim was on target. The doctor was trying to hold the slippery clothes.. the patient concentrated on her breathing and we finally succeeded in givng that injection. I escorted her to the waiting room where the emergency lights were casting a red glow on the chairs. I sat down with her to wait for twenty minutes and we chatted and told jokes.

It was special and so representative of the doctors office nursing experience. Of course each time she comes in I look at those Kimonos and we gaze at the sky wondering if if we will have do injections by flashlight again??

The best thing about working in a out-pt setting are the hours. Mon-Fri 8-4:30 and no weekends. I work for a Specialty Grp.in a hosp.
One Friday morning I was assigned to work with the Bariactric MD. He can be very rude and arrogant when things don't go his way.
Well, he was very rude that morning with me for what ever reason. Who knows? After seeing a couple of pts he said he was running down to the OR and would return to see his pts that were waiting for him in the rooms in 15 mins.
At that point, I was upset with him already for the way he had spoken to me. And now even more so for leaving his pts waiting. Because u know your going to have to explain to them whats taking him so long.
The phone rang and I picked it up, it was him. He was stuck in the elevator. The idiot calls me on his cell phone and I asked me to call someone to get him out. (lmao) I asked him why he was calling me from his cell phone? That there was a phone in the elevator directly connected to security. HE didn't answer me. "Just get me out of here".
At that point I said, (with a laugh) that's what you get for treating people like that.
And now your asking me for help! He chuckled,
and said you know! I was just thinking about you too, and apologized. He was never rude to me again. Now everytime I feel him getting upset I remind him of that episode and we begin to laugh. It breaks the ice.

For me, it's a combination of things. First the hours...I work 9AM to 1Pm, Monday to Friday. Second...it's so totally stress-free. Third...my boss is a gem to work for. (well, most of the time anyway. ) Forth...I get to do a lot of interesting things like take part in clincial studies. And finally fifth....the children. I love them all to pieces.

A funny story? There are several, but the one that still makes me chuckle happened in my previous job. (a pediatric clinic) A Mom was telling me that her child had a fever which she took using the Thermoscan thermometer. (the ear one) For some reason (can't remember why) I asked the mom how she was taking the temperature. I think it had something to do with the temps sounding a wee bit off and because it takes a certain amount of practice to get it right. She said she was doing it rectally. I assumed she meant the thermometer was set to rectal as opposed to oral or actual ear temp. Nope...she was taking the temp RECTALLY. ie, spreading her toddler's cheeks and stuffing the Thermoscan up. It was all I could do to keep my face straight when I explained to her that the termometer was meant to be used on the ear.
