Latchkey kids w/ office nursing,...

I am considering a job offer at a great family practice but my biggest concern are three kids after school and during track out times from school. They are 7, 11, and 12 in ages and I have been out of nursing for 5 years raising them to school age. I want to work but I am really concerned about the 8 to 5:30 hours. Anyone in the same boat and how did it work out for you? I can't afford after school care with track out care,...just one or the other. What would you do?? Thanks for any suggestions.....or info...

Yes I have been, especially over the summer

I hav 12 and 7 year old daughter. My husband and I work over an hour away. It depends on your state on what is acceptable age to leave alone. It depends on the maturity of the kids. Will the younger ones listen to the older one? You must have set guidelines, that you know they will follow. A contact person if they get hurt. and Most importantly put the Fear of God and Mom in them if they get in trouble.

I don't do it often, but when I do, my girls know there is a tight rope and it must be followed

Re: Latchkey kids w/ office nursing,...

My son was a latchkey kid while I was in school. I expected a call at 3:30 every day or I called with a code ring.(He wasn't to answer door or phone). I was home 20 mn after he arrived while I was in school. But in the real world of work, I'd be home after 6:00pm many times. He had chores to do, dishes or vaccuming, something, sports. I recently told him I felt bad about all of that, and his reply to me stunned me..... he said I was the best mom ever and did the best I could. I just prayed alot and had faith this is how it was to be , I could'nt afford a babysitter.

Hope this makes you feel somewhat better, it's a tough decision.

Good Luck with your career and family.
