I'm a senior nursing student and will be graduating in December 2005. I'm very interested in pediatrics. I have one degree already in Child development. I'm just not sure what area of pediatrics I want to work in. Please tell me what it's like or any websites or magazines that would help me learn more about the pediatric nursing field.

Recommend that you try to get an externship at a pediatric facility in your area, if there is one. That will give you the broadest experience plus have the most of different services available to the pedaitric, as well as neonate population.

Thanks Suzanne............actually this summer I do have a externship on the local hospital on the pediatric floor. I had an offer to work at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA, but couldn't afford to live up there and pay rent at my apartment too. Do you know of any good sites or information that I can look up about it? Thanks again for your time.

What can I say about peds nursing! I've been doing it for over 30 yrs and never one time have I hated to go to work. It's always something exciting and you never know what going to walk through that hospital door. I've seen diseases and dx's that alot of people never see it's terrific. And then to make that piece of cake have an icing is when the kids/family give you a big hug and kiss for everything you do for them, or the pics the kids draw for you and say I love you on it. I just can't put into words how much my "kids" mean to me! If you love kids and nursing do it you'll never regret your decision!
Remember if you do what you love and make money that's a winning combination. Questions just ask.

i love my job. i work in a pedi LTC facility the children there are chronically ill. Just about all are at risk for having seizures any minute. Just about all are g/t's, just a few PO's. But when i'm giving my meds and I stroke the face of one of those children and talk to them like they can understand me (they might) and they look at me and smile, that's all i need to know that I'm right where I need to be at this point in my life. And it warms my heart to know I just might have made a child smile today.

paeds is fab! i work on an orthopaedic/ trauma and general med ward. well what can i say. it is so fulfilling to see those children get up and go home knowing you have made them well again. As said in previous post above, the pics, the smiles you get nothing can be so lovely. I recommend paeds any day
