Hi-
I am a nsg student and am currently considering a nurse extern position in pediatrics. Does anyone have any advice as to why this is a good or bad specialty for a nurse. All honest answers welcome.
Thanks!

Hi Amy
I think Pediatrics is a wonderful field to work in but I may be prejudiced because I work it and teach it. I mainly work OB though. In my opinion working in pediatrics you learn how to handle a vast variety of situations and disorders. Organization and communication skills become mastered because dealing with children and parents is creative and unique. If you can,try to get into a childrens hospital because in a community hospital you get kids but not many and you seem to mainly become a Med-surg nurse who takes care of kids sometimes. I hope this helps KIDS are truly wonderful and a joy they keep you on your toes and inspire you. Parents sometimes will drive you NUTS. But thats OK they are supposed to

I am currently a pediatric. I LOVE working with kids. They are a lot of fun, but they need a lot of love and attention. It is really hard to see a child in pain or in need. That is probably the biggest downfall to the job. You also have to remember that sometimes parents can be a little hard to deal with. This is "their baby" and they want the BEST care possible. I believe that the good points of pediatrics far exceed the bad. Your reward comes you see your patient finally smile and laugh with you.

Re: NSG student needs advice on Peds nursing

I want to go back to pediatrics --- remember, part of working with pediatrics is also working with the family - some people have difficulty with this and I find it is very different than working with an adult patients family. But pediatrics is my favorite place to be.
