Need help with a decision.

I just decided I wanted to go into nursing. I really wanted to be a physical therapist, but I'm already 25 and I would be 30 before I would be finished with all the schooling required. I'm trying to decided what field of nursing would be best for me. I don't think I would like working with adults very well. I currently coach gymnastics as I am working through school. I live in Memphis and we have St. Jude's here. I think I would prefer to work in that type of setting. My family tells me that I don't have the ability to panic and I think I just interact better with children. Anybody with any input or other nursing specialties, please let me know. Thanks!!

Re: Need help with a decision.

I think if you really want to be a physical therapist then strive for that goal. Life is too short to go into a career that isnt your number one priority. Dont worry about the years it takes. What if in five years you still have the PT desire but are stuck in a job you truly dont love? I went back to school to be a nurse when I was 48 years old. It took me four years to do it and I am glad I did. If you do want to be a nurse, but am unsure of the specialty you can make that decision along the way. I strived to be in Hospice care, but ended up working in Pediatrics.

I agree with the other post. If there is something that you really want to do, and that is PT, then you should go for that. don't worry about how many years it takes you. You will be a lot happier in the end.

I started working on my nursing when I was 22 and became and got my RN license at 26. That's including pre-reqs and being on the wait list for 1year8months. But that is what I wanted to do

Re: Need help with a decision.

Another agreement with above posts! I earned my first degree (non-nursing) at age 22. When I knew for sure that I really, really wanted to be a nurse, I went back for my BSN at 33. I graduated at 38, and now next Friday I graduate with my master's and nurse practitioner at 49. I feel like I'm starting! It is never to late to start doing the thing you were made to do, the thing you are passionate about. (By the way, to those of us who got a later start, 25 doesn't sound very "old" no matter how long the schooling takes!) Go for your dreams, you will be so glad you did!

Pediatric nursing is an awesome experience, but if your heart isn't totally in it, don't do it. You will get burnt out too easily. If you truly want to go into PT then go for it.
