Re: need advice, 1st pedi job

I just graduated with my BSN back in May, got my RN this past week (YAY!), and am working as a new grad on a small Pediatric unit. I didn't directly apply for Peds (I had OB as my first choice, followed by "graduate nurse position" to see what I could get if OB wasn't an option). I got a call out-of-the-blue for an interview for Peds, accepted it 'cause I had my Peds clinical there and liked it, and proceeded to have a successful interview with the job offer before I left! Good luck in your new job - I've only been Peds nurse a few weeks and I couldn't imagine doing anything else!!

Re: need advice, 1st pedi job

I went into nursing to become a Peds nurse. I had/have zero desire to do any other type of nursing. When I applied for the Peds job at my hospital, I was told that they had fulfilled their quota of new nurses. But after a lot of fighting and persistence, I got my job!!

I've always said that pediatrics is an area that one must have a passion for. Peds requires a lot of patience and a lot of emotional strength. It's not always easy to take care of the febrile toddler who won't take his Tylenol or the depressed teenager who took too much Tylenol. But it is rewarding when you see that child walk out of the hospital the next day and know that you had a part in making them better.

The best part about pediatrics is that the kids don't expect anything from you the way adults do. You don't hear a 7-year-old demand dilaudid every 2 hours around the clock! But remember that you're not only taking care of the physical needs of the child, but also the emotional needs of the parents. They're generally anxious and accepting of any information you can give them. And as long as you're doing everything you can for the child, the family is usually very appreciative, whether the child is discharged to home or sent by medivac to another facility.

Good luck with you journey into the wonderful world of pediatrics!!!!
