Unhappy My Daughter

I have read here what advice you have given others in reference to her late blooming. My daughter is 2 yrs old. Going to be 3 in May. She says a few words when she wants. But I have to agree she grunts and points. I have to say that I do that. However, tomorrow she has an appt to get a hearing test. Then on the 20th she will have her 1st appt with a speech therapist. I don't feel she has a hearing problem because she hears me just fine and she obeys when she is told something.

I did enroll her in day care which she starts on 1st of February. I am wondering if I should do all three. I am so afraid she is not going to talk. I did almost give birth to her at 28 weeks and we did go through a lot. I went through a divorce. Me and my ex used to fight a lot. I was wondering if anyone has anything to say. It would help me a lot..

I think you are wise to consider all three options for your child, especially the speech therapy. It's best to let the pros who evaluate your child suggest the proper plan for her growth and development to increase according to what your daughter can handle.

One of my grandsons is two years old, and he is seeing a speech therapist several times a week in the home. My daughter says he's doing great, and loves to see the speech therapist come. I have a feeling your daughter will be just fine with the proper help and guidance. You are already setting things in motion for that to happen, so have faith she'll be just fine.

((((hugs))))

I agree with the other poster to take advice from the professionals. Let the speech therapist eval her and give you a plan. I'm not sure if I would rush into daycare unless you don't have a choice. I don't see that as solving the problem in and of itself. Daycare/pre-school is a big change and can be stressful.

Hope all goes well with the speech therapist.

Hi Hope,

I spoke with my sister who is a speech therapist regarding your daughter. She offered some questions for me to ask you?

Are you paying for the Speech evaluation or is your local public school system? In most states, they are required to pay.

Regarding daycare, once your child is evaluated, if it is determined that she needs special education (I know the term has a stigma, sorry) then the school system must provide that in most states. Also, the school system should have a child study team evaluate, not just a speech therapist. I know you mentioned daycare, but she doesn't feel that regular daycare would help her with speech. She would need a focused program to help her to develop her communication skills.

One more question, is your home bi-lingual? Often, bi-lingual children are slower to talk, but once they do, they know 2 languages. So, in the end, it is a good thing.

I'll say a pray for your little one tonight. Feel free to pm me if you'd like me to ask my sister anymore questions. She's really good and has worked with all kinds kids with many different kinds of speech/communication disorders.

God bless,

Well I took her to get the hearing test. But my daughter did not want to sit still the way they want to. So, the audio person said he wants to do another test but sedated...That bothers me more than anything. It's amazing sometimes how things work.. I am in a bind...I feel so bad..

Please go over to your nearest bookstore and get Thomas Sowell's books about late-talking children. They will ease your mind. Scroll down and read the descriptions of his books I've posted below. Then run run run to the bookstore. :-)

I just got the books today. Sorry for the delay in response. I am starting to read it. I can't believe there are so many children and at a older age. I am just so concerned. But once I read both books. I will let u know. Also, she has a speech therapist coming on the 29th. She had an appt before but it was cancelled. Also she starts day care on the 2nd. I am somewhat excited. I am just still in a big sense of feeling awful..

Oh thank you so much. Sorry I didn't update before. I am just waiting for the speech therapist to come. I was told also that a teacher is coming with the therapist. I went with this program.
