One of my nurses this summer was a new grad. Only out 3 months. She was even one of the best and most compassionate nurses I have had.

i would have hated nursing if i had to do some time in adult med surge. just gross. not my thing... i was hired right into pediatrics at the place that i work it. and most of my classmates were hired in the specialties that they wanted to be in. it really depends on the hospital. in most metropolitan cities, i wouldn't doubt it that they hire new grads because the demand is so high for nurses. I'm in long beach, ca and it seems like we are ALWAYS short of nurses. THank god for peds. I thought I was going to hate working with kids when I was in nursing school, but after that semester was over i realized i loved it!

I hate taking care of adults. I plan on going straight into peds when I graduate (in 5 months!).

I am still in school as well, but before going back to get my RN I had been a MA for many years. I worked in Peds for about 2 years and love it. I have had a child in NICU and know what it is like to be on the other side, I went back to school with that in mind. My goal is to work in the NICU. I love babies and kids, and even when they are ill they are so much happier than adults
I watch the local Childrens hospital webpage and they have grad nurse positions all the time. At this time they have 7. It can be done and I too am so excited to get there

Hi everyone!!! I just wanted to update you guys!!! Unfortunately, there were no spots available for a peds preceptorship. I will be precepting in adult med-surg. It's okay though, I know will get some great experience. I have not given up on peds though!!! I will still apply to the local Children's Hospital in my area. Wish me luck, and I will keep you updated.

HELLO EVERYONE!!! I am just writing to update you all! I really need all of your prayers right now! I just applied to the Children's Hospital in my area and I pray that I get it (or at least an interview)! I want it soooooooo bad, I don't think I would want to work anywhere else. Any advice on the interview process or following up on my application would be appreciated. I love love love pediatrics and this is where my heart is! Thanks guys for "listening"!!

Brush up on your growth and development, respiratory assessment, drug calculations and interpersonal skills.

Just be yourself and tell them why you want to work with kids. If they see your passion you shouldn't have a problem. I went right into pediatric Hem/onc when I graduated. I knew it was the only place I wanted to work and they had a great training program for new grads.
I am now returning to the same position after 16 years away to raise my own girls. I never imagined they would even talk to me let alone hire me. I had one interview and they offered me the position. I feel like a new grad in a way, but I also have the previous 5 years of experience on the floor. I know I have a lot to catch up on, but I am so happy to be going back to my passion.
If you just tell them why you want to work with kids, I don't think you'll have any trouble.
