Question Research problem! Re-Instigation of Swab/sponge counts

Hi everyone, I'm new here. What a great site I'm trying to find out the approximate date in the history of surgical nursing when sponge/swab and instrument counts were first introduced. I have searched for quite a while and found little conclusive material regarding this puzzler. Anyone out there have any Ideas? Thanks for your input. Ciao for now!

I'm just thinking off the top of my head here, but you could check out the AORN website and see if they have any articles on the history of OR nursing. You could also check out some OR nursing textbooks, like Alexanders' Care of the Patient in Surgery.
