pregnant and nervous...

Hello, just found out I am pregnant. I have one month left of orientation and then I am completly solo. Here is the thing....I have been doing alot of fluoro this entire month (vascular). Anyways...I wore the complete wrap lead apron at all times. Do you think this was adequate? I understand that the damage is done, but I just found out. My other question is....I would normally wait until later to tell my employer, especially since I am not completely done with orientation, but this radiation thing has me freaked out. At least people will understand why I am running OUT of the room instead of just leading up. I would appreciate anyone's experiences in this situation. Like I said..I am only 5 weeks

I would assume it depends on whether or not you turned your back to the radiation while wearing lead. I always face the radiation. I will even walk backwards to leave the room so I keep facing the radiation.

Time, distance, and shielding are the 3 factors that determine your radiation exposure. How much time did you spend near fluoro? How close were you to it? Was your shielding adequate?

Here is an article about pregnancy and x-rays:

Here's a more optimistic article, but I think it assumes that you got only one x-ray...

Re: pregnant and nervous...

Tell them early. We don't assign our pregnant employees to rooms using floro. But wear a full wrap if it can't be avoided. They also don't get assigned to ortho rooms where cement is used.

Re: pregnant and nervous...

If you were in a full wrap and not standing in the path of the xray you should be alright. I have been told at the begining stages of pregnancy scatter has little effect on the baby. Does your facility have pregnancy lead? I would let your scheduler know you are pregnant so you can be in other cases. I'm also preggers and training in OR and have been told several times to stick to short cases with lead on because the risk of overheating inreases with each week of pregnancy. Be sure to eat a good breakfast and drink plenty of fluids if you wil be in on a long case. Good luck and congrats!
