Question Med-Surg before OR?

Does anyone think it is necessary to work in Med-Surg before working in the OR? I really don't really like Med-Surg, but I wanted to know some of your opinions. Thanks a bunch!

Re: Med-Surg before OR?

There isn't any one answer on this. Depends on how well that the new nurse can think on their own and handle an emergency, essentially....how comfortable do they feel being on their own and in charge of their room. Each nurse has their own safety net feeling, and needs to feel comfortable with their skills. Some new grads do excellent in the OR right away, others do not stay becasue they would have done better having some experience under their belt.

Re: Med-Surg before OR?

You may find it helpful to search through previous Operating Room threads for answers to this question. It has been asked many, many times previously, and answered. And, no, I don't think its at all necessary to do Med/Surg before OR nursing or any other type of nursing. Do what calls to you - just make sure you get a great orientation. Better yet, go through a mentorship or nurse residency program. Good luck.

I am working in the med/surg floor right now for about 2 months right after graduation. I hate med/surg so much that I want to get out right away.
Luckily, I am able to transfer to OR in Jan and I just hope that things will get better over there.
If I were you, I would not even go into med/surg, it is such a nightmare.
OR and med/surg are completely different so going to the med/surg floor doesn't mean that you will do better in OR.

Re: Med-Surg before OR?

I agree, you shouldn't have work on med surg if you know you don't want to.
I knew from the day I graduated that floor nursing wasn't for me. God Bless the nurses who like it.
But if I would have had to put in a year on med surg first I might not still be a nurse. Just my .02

Like grimmy said look for old threads on this subject. My opinion hasn't changed since the first posting. Mike
