I'm looking for opinions from experienced OR nurses, I appreciate any input you can give. I am very excited to have an interview at our local community hospital for an OR position. I'm a RN with no previous OR experience but they are willing to train. My question is about having a latex sensitivity. I cannot wear any latex gloves, although I have no trouble being around latex or handling things such as BP cuff, etc. I've talked with other RN's who work in the hospital, but don't know anyone in OR. Of those I've talked with, they don't think it will be an issue. Our hospitals are moving toward "latex free" and do have non-latex sterile gloves.

My first question is; do you think this would be a significant barrier for me working in OR?

Secondly, do you think I could wait to reveal this until after a job offer is made? Of course, they shouldn't descriminate against me because of it...but if I wasn't offered a position after revealing this info I would always wonder if it made the difference.

Talk about being in a quandry...I personally wouldn't say anything to them, because of what you said...They AREN"T supposed to discriminate so they will havfe to deal w/issues sich as thes when it comes around. If they should say something about it, then in a politically correct way, tell them you didn't think it would be an issue since they shouldn't discriminate, etc. Although; you'll need to watch your P's n Q's after that and show them the extra trouble they'll have to go to for you is worth it!!!!!

Do you have a documented allergy to latex or just a sensitivity to latex gloves?
If you applied for this job and filled out an application for employment, have you had a pre-employment physical? Is one of the questions on the forms regarding allergies?
If it were me I would be honest about anything which may impact on my health adversely.

most OR'S have latex free gloves available both sterile and non-sterile. also there are some hand lotions that provide some barrier protection.. i wish youluck the OR will always be my first love.. but love the hours and autonomy of Home Health now
