Lightbulb Laparoscopic Procedures-boredom?

Hi to all. Have been working in the OR for the past 30 years, mostly as a clinical practitioner and for the last 4 years as chief staff nurse in charge of General Surgery at my hospital. I love open surgery. The lap.procedures ,for most part, are active ,when it comes to the surgeons............as for the nurses, well,I find them a bit boring. Staring at the screen and from time to time, handing over an instrument doesn't "do" it for me.Most of the nurses ask for chairs after the first half hour of the procedure.

The larger procedures,colonal-rectal are long, tedious and after several hours, everyone wakes up because the patient has to be opened.

How do we keep ourselves involved,interested-any suggestions would really be appreciated!

Re: Laparoscopic Procedures-boredom?

LOL, I agree. A few years ago, durring a laparoscopic appendectomy, I mentioned to the surgeon that if he added up the length of those three 1 inch trocar incisions, he would have a 3 inch OPEN appendix incision, and we would have been in recovery by now. He told me to hush! <giggle>

I always refer to lapro general procedures as "hurry up and wait" cases. So much crap to get ready, then you just STAND there.
