I don't know if this topic has been brought up on this board...
How do you handle holiday call where you work? Do you sign up for holidays or does it go by seniority? We're trying to figure out how to assign holiday call for 2007. In past years we gave our first,second and third choice for holiday. This year we're going to try a different method.

We rotate. Like last year i was on for 4th of July. This year i'm on for Labor Day. Year after that i'll be on for Thanksgiving.

people sign up for it and then when no one signs up for the shift at our wednesday staff meeting they draw names..

We are given a list of the holiday call that need to be covered (our holiday call is 24hr), we write our choice by each one and sign our name at the bottom of the sheet and turn it in. Surprisingly enough, once all papers are returned most can be filled by choices. If there are any left that have to be mandated like Christmas day; it is rotated.

The place I work at full-time has always used a seniority list and it has worked well for the 30 years I have been there. The other place I work part-time at has a scheduling co-ordinator that rotates on a regular basis. That works well for them with the large staff.

We, like many of you, rotate holidays.
The hospital observes the main holidays, New Years Day, Christmas, 4th of July, Memorial Day, etc....we added in a few more as department holidays, such as Christmas and New Year's Eve.
What we do is rotate. No seniority, but we work it so that you don't have the same holiday back to back years. We also try to make it a "major" holiday and a "lesser" holday, mixing Christmas Day and Labor Day, for an example.
Right now we have 6 RN's in the rotation.
Our biggest problem is trying to not give someone like Christmas Day (major) and New Year's Eve (minor) right close together.
We are good about trading, with no little kids at home, I'm usually willing to trade Christmas for the nurses that do have kids or grand kids to enjoy Christmas.
