Guess what?!?!

I'm officially an OR nurse!

I don't graduate until August, but I have accepted a position and I'm thrilled. I'll precept for about 6 months, which sounds like just about the right amount of time to me.

I'm so excited, I can't even explain. I was going back and forth between OR and ICU, and now that I've made my decision, I'm completely convinced that I've made the right one for me.

Can you recommend any books that I might want to start reviewing?

Thanks,
Amanda

Thumbs up Re: Guess what?!?!

CONGRATULATIONS! Will you be both scrubbing and circulating at the facility you were hired at? You might find this book helpful: Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery by Jane C. Rothrock, or just do an Amazon search for operating room techniques, procedures, instrumentation, etc. Please post again soon about your experiences!

Re: Guess what?!?!

Thank you! There may be opportunity to scrub later, but I'll be circulating, and they aren't going to even think about teaching me to scrub until I've got circulating down pat. That's fine with me. I think I"d like to scrub at some point, but circulating is great with me too.

Thanks for the book recommendation!

Im starting my senior practicum in the OR but like you I'm having the hardest time deciding between the OR of ICU. I was wondering how you came about your decision. Any advice is welcomed.

Re: Guess what?!?!

Books???

Alexander's "Care of the Patient in Surgery " by Jane Rothrock - the gold standard. It dry, but it is an excellent resources

"Berry and Kohn's Operating Room Technique" by Nancy Fortunato-Phillips.- More exciting than Alexander's though not as detailed. it is still an excellent book.

Congrats on your new OR position.

I made a list of what I considered pros and cons of both areas. Then I made a list of what I thought I could bring to both areas and where I'd be challenged by both areas. After doing that, my decision was pretty easy. You might want to try doing that and see if it helps you. Good luck!

thanks Amanda for the advice I actually just got back from my very first day of my senior practicum in the OR and I loved it. I helped circulate for a case that was crazy. We took out a spleen, kidney, adrenal gland, and a pancreas all in one mass. then we took out lymph nodes. Surgery really interests me. I think thats how I got my nick name from some of my friends. I really appreciate your advice and I pretty much already have a lot of pros right now so the scale is tipping.
