During my first year of nursing which has just finished we learned gowning and gloving. Bloody hell it was hard, how long did it take some of you guys to get the hang of it. I find putting the gloves on the hardest. Any tips??

I never had too much prob with gloving. Just have to remember that you can only touch the inside of the glove. After practice it came easier. I am not an OR nurse, so the only time I ever had to gown was at the last hospital I worked at where we had to gown for our c-sections. I HATED it!!! I ended up just asking the scrub nurse to gown me. This was after the circulator bit my head off for grabbing the shoulders of my gown to pull it up on them. Oh well... I would just say that anything gets easier with practice.

Ditto-- it does get easier with practice! Just be patient with yourself and you will get the hang of it.

I am betting they made you learn to open glove, which is difficult to do without contaminating yourself. They usually make you do it that way in school.

How long does it take to get the hang of open gloving? Well, I went to OR school in 1975, and I still find it hard to open glove without contaminating myself.

In the "real world" people RARELY open glove, even though we know we should (like when we notice a hole in our glove, and need to change in the middle of a case.) Closed gloving is far, far easier, and one is much less prone to contaminate his or herself.

Don't worry; they will let you closed glove soon enough, and you will be able to do it in the dark!

Practice Practice and Practice, and Yes the Circulator should have nailed you on grabbing at your shoulders, Thats the fastest way for you to get contaminated. You have a nice scrub if she gowned you. I do not allow my scrub to gown a Nurse, they have enough to do without gowning someone else besides the Drs and the PA's. But thats just me.

Yes it takes a while to get the hang of it. I give new people their own gown table so they can take their time to do it and not feel pressured. Try to practice at home (most warm up jackets have knitted cuffs like OR gowns, so you can use those), it is much easier when nobody is watching.
Relax you can do it!!!!!!

I find that using Biogel gloves work best for not bunching up your cuffs. Ortho gloves irritate me.

I'm a new grad using the closed glove technique; i find it kind of difficult with the way i was taught. My cuffs always get in teh way,but i have just started going into the OR so haven't had a lot of practice. I can't work with Biogels, i need to have the powder for ease of fit. Gowning is easy though

After just a few days of gloving, I am able to do it pretty quickly. Like they say, Practice makes perfect!

its real easy when you do it a lot... we try to close glove whenever possible but you do get used to it....

and dont worry about being slow, everyone is at first....
