Good Book?

This is my 3rd week working in the OR of a large hospital. We will be training to scrub and circulate for every specialty that we offer (which is everything but eyes and peds).

Can anyone recommend a good surgical manual that outlines the procedure and tools for a large variety of surgeries, so that I can mentally prepare myself and understand what is needed when I am seeing it?

Thank you

Re: Good Book?

I recommend Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery by Jane Rothrock. This is a very comprehensive text that covers the basics and well as the various specialties. It's a little pricey, but well worht it, especially for OR newbies.

Alexander's on Amazon

Best wishes in your new job!

Re: Good Book?

Alexander's is the gold standard. This one is good, too - you can carry it around with you easier: Pocket Guide to the Operating Room, see it here: http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Guide-O...822565-2986326

Check out http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/surgeryvideos.html to see surgical videos. This will help you visualize what to expect. Good luck!
