Hi! I was an SICU nurse for 7 years, took a few years off, and just found out I was accepted into an OR preceptorship in the fall. I am very excited, always wanted to do OR nursing, but time was never right. My question is...I wear glasses (bifocals), and can't see without them! When I worked in ICU, I never had to wear goggles over them, they were shield enough, I guess. Anyways, this seems like a dumb question, but can I just wear my glasses in the OR? Will I need some sort of shield? I'd like to know now, since if I need new glasses, I am going to have to save a little over summer, they've gotten so expensive. First it depends on how large the surface of them are. Do they provide protection to your eyes if something splatters? Can you put protective side pieces on so that you are protected from sprays that come to you, but not head on? Some hospitals require those. My recommendation would just be to put a face shield on over your glasses, that is the easiest.

I like the masks with the attached shields the best. Can't find a pair of goggles that are comfortable, and the side shields are ineffective, imho.

Don't waste your money on new glasses, we don't get paid enough... get yourself a good pair of goggles that fit comfortably over your glasses, or get used to the masks with an integral visor.
